The 12 800ha reserve hosts the fynbos and succulent karoo biomes, and attractions include the Stadsaal cave and Elephant rock art, as well as rock sculptures. Visitors can enjoy rock climbing at Truitjieskraal, and the hiking trail.
The nature reserve was proclaimed in 1997, previously a production farm. The reserve is rich in flora with beautiful flower season giving a spectacular array of the landscape. Birdwatching is also one of the main activities in the reserve and there is an active breeding program for a pair of Black eagles (Aquila verreauxii) which are often seen soaring on the thermals above the reserve. The park is part of the Cedarberg Conservancy who can be contacted for reservations and any enquiries about the reserve or contact CapeNature offices.
A permit is required to visit these attractions and is available for purchase at the CapeNature offices or at any private tourism offices in the Cederberg area. There is no cellphone reception on the largest part of the reserve; the last reception point is the Algeria section of the Cederberg. Campsites are available for visitors situated along the banks of the Rondegat River. (Updated Mar-18).
