Mporokoso is a small town in the northern region of Zambia that you’re likely to pass through en route to Lake Mweru Wantipa, Ndole Bay at Nsumbu on Lake Tanganyika and Mweru-Wantipa National Park. It’s located on the D19 highway and offers a convenient stopover between Kasama, Kawambwa and Mpulungu.
Traveller DescriptionSituated in Zambia’s wet northern province, Mporokoso is surrounded by waterfalls. Of these, the Mumbuluma Falls on ‘the other Luangwa River’ (not to be confused with the Mumbuluma Falls on the Luamfumu River near Mansa, see page XXX), about 45 km southwest of Mporokoso, is the most impressive; a wide curtain of water stretches right across the river, with masses of water pouring over the low falls. It’s an ideal place to picnic and you’ll enjoy peace and quiet even over the weekend, as there are no villages in the immediate vicinity.
The Lupupa Falls on the Mukubwe River are situated further north, these resemble a bridal veil that drops 90 m into the deep gorge below and offers beautiful views along the Mukubwe River Valley. Getting there requires some travel on a rough track and finding a guide in Chandalala village to take you the final three kilometres, but it’s well worth the effort!
The Kapuma Falls, only seven kilometres from town on a private farm, are a series of small rapids with a nice picnic spot. You need to ask permission at the farmhouse to visit the falls.
The Pule Falls, at 15 m are not very high but are beautiful nevertheless and well worth the 500 m walk from the car park.

SHOPS & SERVICES
There’s a Natsave bank (but no ATM) in town and for emergencies you can buy (expensive) fuel from drums at the Nkade Enterprises Fuel Stop Depot, but don’t rely on fuel availability here. That said, the owner is friendly and can assist with tyre repairs. A proper fuel station is now available in Mporokoso. There are a few small shops for basic supplies, but no supermarket.
Accommodation is only available in guest houses but if you don’t mind roughing it for a night or two (i.e. no facilities), it’s possible to bush camp in the peace and quiet of Mumbuluma Falls.
