Located in Zimbabwe :: Mashonaland East
Category: Places :: Settlement

Featherstone, after the name of a farm originally owned by the Tarr brothers, well-known in the area. The Tarr brothers appear to have been Cecil Crosby Tarr born about 1885, Bathurst, E.Cape, and Samuel Percival Tarr, born about 1893 "Transkei". The former died 1934 and the latter 1939, both died at Featherstone Farm, Charter District. The family came from the Eastern Cape area, between Grahamstown and Bathurst at Featherstone Kloof. (There is a Featherstone Brewery in Grahamstown today) In the early part of the 20th century, the district was largely occupied by Afrikaans speaking farmers. Featherstone Hill is an extinct volcanic flow. Its slopes are covered in lava, the rocks giving their identity away by virtue of the bubble holes contained within them often filled with silica and in some cases forming geodes with crystals inside.
