This Ouberg Pass (one of several in South Africa) connects the farms on the Gifberg plateau with the Eastern edge of the Knersvlakte. It is possible to drive this in tandem with the much steeper Gifberg pass. It is a 55km lovely drive along the plateau to link these two passes. It can be driven in either direction.
The Ouberg Pass is a much revered gravel road pass by adventure travellers. It is an impressive pass with an altitude elevation of 820 meters over 10,4km to produce a stiff average gradient of 1:13 but the steepest parts are at 1:5. It is a perennial favourite with offroad clubs and touring bikers. This track can get very muddy and slippery after rain making it challenging to get through. It’s suitable for all vehicles. Avoid this pass in severe weather conditions. It’s frequently blanketed in snow in mid-winter.
Used by the pioneer farmers as one of the first two access roads to the Roggeveld and later the town of Sutherland. Building work on the current pass was built in 1968 and completed in 1969. The accepted (and expected) behaviour of travellers using this road is to close any gate you found closed and to leave open any gate you found open.
