Border Control Ongeluksnek Pass Border Post (RSA/LESOTHO) 08h00 - 16h00

ID: w277031 View large map

Located in South Africa :: Eastern Cape
Category: Civil Infrastructure :: Border Control

Ongeluksnek border post is between South Africa and Lesotho and 4WD vehicles are required. This is the only border control close to the Lesotho and RSA border here, there is NO Lesotho border control point on the Lesotho side of the border. Have your passports ready to be stamped here. Immaculate ablution facilities.

Please note that since there is no Border Control on the Lesotho side, so when entering or exiting at Ongeluksnek, you will only pass through the South African Border Control. This means that when entering Lesotho from Ongeluksnek, you will only be stamped out from South Africa and not stamped into Lesotho. Likewise, when entering South Africa from Ongeluksnek you will not be stamped out of Lesotho and only be stamped in from South Africa.
It is therefore not possible to be stamped in or out of Lesotho at Ongeluksnek as no Border Control exists.

In the past, this has created some problems when being stopped by Police in Lesotho, however, after deliberating with Officials from Lesotho and the Lesotho Tourism Board, this has been cleared up and it is 100% legal to enter Lesotho via Ongeluksnek in this manner. Any attempts to intimidate travellers who enter Lesotho via Ongeluksnek should be reported and the Date, Time and Place of such incident recorded along with the name of the officer if possible.

Please do remember that when travelling in Lesotho, you must come to a complete stop with your vehicle at any Stop Signs you encounter, despite Police Officers encouraging you to drive towards them, you must first stop at the Stop Sign and then you may continue towards the awaiting Police Officer.

Closest Town :  Avondale

Note that this is a high rainfall area, therefore this track is often very muddy and slippery. No road maintenance is done on this road. Do not travel this pass in severe weather conditions. Good quality mud tyres fitted to your vehicle will help. Vehicles with diff locks and high ground clearance will transverse this pass easier. For safety purposes a minimum of 2 vehicles is recommended. The higher you climb the rougher and rockier the road gets. You can expect high winds and electrical storms at the summit at times during summer, and snowfall during winter. From the summit down to Lesotho the road levels off to a comfortable gradient, and follows a wide grassy plateau. (Source: Mountain Passes South Africa).
