Genocide Memorial was erected in remembrance of all the people who lost their lives at the hands of the Schutztruppe, which was the African colonial armed force of imperial Germany, during the period 1904 - 1908. It was erected in Robert Mugabe Avenue on the spot where the controversial German statue known as the Reiterdenkmal used to stand. It is also the site of a concentration camp for Herero and Nama people during the genocide. The statue depicts a man and woman standing on a dome, breaking the chains of colonialism. Underneath the dome is a wall showing hanged prisoners.
