The Afar settlement of Hamedela is situated on the edge of the Danakil Depression which is officially the hottest place on the planet, holding the record high monthly average temperature for any inhabited area on earth at nearly 47 degrees Celsius. This settlement, consisting of a haphazard cluster of grass walled dwellings, is also the site of a potash mine for which an Israeli company bought a 24 year concession in the early 2010’s. Due to this contract the road from Mekele is tarred. There is also an army camp, a remnant of the war with Eritrea, which provides armed guards to escort tour companies into the Depression.
