Scenic Route The Congo Nile Trail Path One (Gisenyi To Karongi)

Located in Rwanda :: Rwanda
Category: Scenic Routes :: Scenic Route

The Congo Nile Trail Path One is a scenic hiking/cycling trail between Gisenyi and Karongi which skirts the shore of Lake Kivu. The rating for the trail is easy to moderate, the highest point being 1887m, and there are a few base camps where hikers can sleep over. This first section of the Congo Nile Trail is without a doubt more scenic than the second section which starts out in Kibuye on the main tar road leading south to Kamembe.

Although this 91km long trail can be driven with a 4x4 vehicle, it starts out from Gisenyi as a good gravel road and then become a twin track until it is eventually just a footpath for about 14km. The eastern side of Lake Kivu is hilly, fertile and intensely cultivated and this route passes by many villages with friendly Rwandese. The kids are especially excited to see “Muzungu”. The trail offers superb views of the deeply dissected, convoluted lake shore, with its clear green waters and myriad peninsulas and islands.
