Directions

From Kigali, Rwanda - 3.5 hours direct / 5 hours public transport:
Travel north from Kigali through Musanze to the Cyanika Border crossing into Uganda - 13km on tarmac road to Kisoro Town, stop here for a last minute supermarket, phone provider (MTN only in our area) or ATM stop.

Leave Kisoro town past the Kindly Fuel station toward Mutorere Hospital, the tarmac road will end a few km’s from town. You will now travel on a dirt road almost directly to Rubuguri. Immediately past Mucha Hotel (on left side by a small stream) you will approach a Y intersection with many signs - veer to the right. You will weave around corners, climb hills, have a view of both Lake Mutanda and Lake Muhele, shortly you will drop down a hill into a small trading centre (called Kabahundi - no signage however) at which you will continue straight ahead (do not turn right or left).

Continue the weaving around corners and hill climbs and you will eventually reach a T intersection with many signs - turn right this is the last turn before reaching Rubuguri Town.

Travel through Rubuguri Town A, down the hill, past the playground, up through Rubuguri Town B, Boda stage on the left, Akaanya Pub on the right, continue through as if you were leaving the town a veer to the left and a veer to the right - and you find Karungi Camp on your right hand side.

From Kampala, Uganda - 8 hours direct / 12 hours public transport:
Travel west from Kampala, through Masaka, Mbarara, Ntungamo and Kabale. A few kilometers past a town called Muko (there are signs), there is a turn off to the right at which you will see a bunch of signs for lodges in Rushaga - turn right here. The tarmac ends here and you will find yourself on a maram road straight through to Rubuguri (there is one slight Y intersection - stay to the right).

You will pass through many small villages (Botengo & Nyanamo, are the largest) with some absolutely stunning views of the Virunga Volcano Range (in the wet season). As you approach Rubuguri, you will see Karungi Camp sign on you left hand side (we are immediately before the Rubuguri Town sign).

Travelling Information
Closest Town :  Kisoro

Self Drive Access :  Yes
Vehicle Type :  ALL

ACCESS/TRANSPORT:
The nearest International airport is the Kigali Airport (3 hours (private transfer)) or the domestic airport at Kisoro (25min away).

No shuttle service per say, but we are surrounded by trusted drivers who can assist with any transport required. We can meet you at Cyanika (the border to Uganda from Rwanda) or arrange a private collection from the airport in Kigali.

The nearest car rental agency is likely Mbarara or Kigali. Road Trip Africa is one of the most widely used car rental agencies, with most pickups from Kampala / Entebbe.

No rivers to cross, and the roads are generally passable under all conditions, but can become quite slippery after heavy rains. Worst section between Rushaga and Rubuguri.

BOOKINGS:
Pre-booking is preferred, but not essential. Self-drive tourists will easily be accommodated.

CLIMATE:
The rainy season brings the best & clearest views but will limit the activities you can do in a day as it tends to rain in the afternoons. The dry season will extend your days and you will get more accomplished in your day, however the views are often hazy and the Virunga’s are obscured from view.

Weather here is cyclical (like a sine wave) and always changing. The heaviest rains are experienced in April / May and Sept / October and the driest months Dec / Jan and June / July - with each month in between either increasing or decreasing in the amounts of rain.

SERVICES:
Note that the internet connection is very slow. For calling on a cellphone the reception is good. (Oct-2017).
