The “Legoga Lwa Ga Kobekwe” (Kebokwe’s Cave, also known as Livingstone’s Cave, is just outside Molepolole, on the B11 road to Thamaga. According to Bakwena tradition, a witch named Kebokwe was executed by throwing her from the rocks, but she used her magic to land unharmed. Since then, giant snakes haunt the cave and surrounding hills. In 1847, David Livingstone, physician, missionary and explorer, convinced Kgosi Sechele I, chief of the Bakwena, that he would spend a night in the cave to prove that the spirits could not harm him. When he emerged unscathed the next morning, the chief briefly converted to Christianity. (Sep-17)
