National Park Chizarira National Park

ID: w399764 View large map

Located in Zimbabwe :: Matabeleland North
Category: Protected Areas :: National Park

Booking

One of Zimbabwe's least known and least visited parks, also called “The Home of the Hidden Gorges” is situated on top of the Zambezi escarpment. This park covers 200 000ha on the Chizarira Hills in Western Zimbabwe. Chizarira National Park is the fourth-largest national park in Zimbabwe after the iconic Hwange, Gonarezhou and Mana Pools National Parks.

The name of the park comes from the Batonga word chijalila, which translates into English as “great barrier”, referring to the Zambezi Escarpment, of which Chizarira’s rough terrain forms a part. The infrastructure of this park is not well developed and there has been little maintenance done on the roads; there are seven bush camping sites. Unaccompanied walking by visitors is not permitted.

There are few visitors; no tarred roads; and no accommodation other than basic campsites, some with amazing views across the Zambezi Valley to Lake Kariba.
