The Waterberg is another dominant Limpopo mountain range, also known as Thata Meetse in Sotho. It stretches 150km in an arc to the south and is part of the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. The average height of the mountain range is 600 m with a few peaks rising up to 2,000 m above sea level. The mountain range is composed of antediluvian rock formations, expansive savannah plains, dense riparian forests and plunging river valleys with several thousand feet of brown, red, and purple sandstones and some rather minor shales. It is home to more than 90 mammal species and more than 200 indigenous bird species.
The name Waterberg is derived because on the south-eastern slope water therefore escapes along this layer in the form of several springs – even during the dry season from May until September. One of the springs bubbles, provides delicious drinking water.
