Sutherland is a popular place for the observatory, because of Namakwa's clear, dark skies and evenly distributed weather patterns. Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) is the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere.

The SAAO is open to visitors - 2 Day tours per day R20.00 pp, 4 night tours per week R40.00 pp and booking is essential (maximum of 20 people).

Tours include slide presentation, a talk on SALT, explanations of how astronomers collect data, and a tour of the domes.
