Vilanculos isn't a big town, but its beautiful palm fringed beaches are spread out over about 5 km. Vilanculos is popular for water sports as there is plentiful wind. It is also the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park. You can take a dhow (local sailboat) or a speedboat to the islands within the park. The local market at Vilanculos sells a huge variety of fresh fish, so you can expect a vibrant African atmosphere.

Vilanculos is indeed quite unique as there is no surf, because of shelter from the large islands and the calm waters permit many small fishing boats to moor offshore in the bay.
