The Drostdy dates back to 1747 when the Dutch East India Company constructed the building to serve as residence and official headquarters for the Landdros. The property was sold from one family to another until 1939 when it was bought by the government of the Union of South Africa for the purpose of establishing a museum. At present the museum still stands as a Cape Dutch styled building, with a thatched roof, made with clay and unbaked bricks and mortar. Yellowwood was used as timber. Various section are found at the museum with some sections resembling the daily lives of the people who stayed there, the tools and equipment they used. Some sections includes the tannery, the mill and outdoor oven, thatching and coppersmith. This collection of charming buildings are of great architectural value making the Drostdy Museum a leading historical museum. It is renowned for its fine collection of late 18th and early 19th century Cape furniture.

“This is a beautifully preserved and maintained museum. The entrance fee is R25 pp. and well worthwhile if you have the time to spend a couple of hours studying the magnificent exhibits” - Chris Smit, 2015/10/23
