The Usambaras have two sub ranges, the higher West Usambaras (2 290 m) and the East Usambaras, which are nearer the coast and receive more rainfall. Combined these ranges are approximately 90 kilometres long. These mountains were once clad in virgin tropical rainforest but are now highly populated and intensely cultivated. Most of the inhabitants are subsistence farmers who rely heavily on the forests around them for timber and fire wood. Apart from the cultivation, they also keep livestock. Lushoto in the West Usambaras is a popular stop, with the nearby Sakharani winery and Irente viewpoint well worth a visit. (Sept 2021)
