Booking

A small town on the border between Zambia and Botswana that’s home to the Kazungula Ferry which transports vehicles across the Zambezi River between the two countries. This border post is part of the major south-north transport line between South Africa’s Durban harbour and Zambia. The Kazungula Bridge is under construction and should be completed in 2020. This will replace the ferry and ease the flow of traffic between the two countries.

Traveller Description

The Kazungula Bridge crosses the Zambezi River into Zambia, travellers heading for Namibia have to enter via the Ngoma Bridge border post and visitors to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe side) make use of the Kazungula Road border post. Note that you can also view the falls from Livingstone (Zambian side).

Even though queues at the Kazangula Road border post into Zimbabwe are often long due to tourists traveling to Victoria Falls, overlanders reported that this is an easy and efficient border post, as long as you have all the documents you need. Simply follow the numbers from counter to counter.

If you cross into Zambia, a bridge fee ($20 in 2024) is payable on top of normal cross-border charges. Sometimes the card machine is down, so it is best to have dollars or kwacha handy, depending on where you are heading.

Travelling Information

FUEL:
The Engen fuel stop sometimes runs out of diesel as all the trucks refuel here where diesel is cheaper. So if you’re travelling through Kasane, it’s a good idea to refuel at the Shell or Puma fuel station before proceeding to Kazungula. (Mar-2024).

HEALTH CARE:
You will find a 24hr Medical Care Centre and pharmacy at the Choppies Shopping Centre. You can contact Dr. Ndlovu on +267 72 672 140.

MECHANICAL REPAIRS:
There is the Mario's Garage for top quality auto repairs situated in Kazungula Industrial, Tel: +267 625 2294. (Mar-2024).

SERVICES:

SHOPPING:
There’s no ban on taking fresh meat and fresh produce (for your own consumption) into Zambia and Zimbabwe but you may be hassled by entrepreneurial officials. If you want to avoid this hassle, there is an OK food store and small Hypermarket in Vic Falls (Zimbabwe) and a Shoprite in both Mongu and Livingstone (Zambia), that are all well stocked. (Mar-2019).

TOW- IN SERVICES:
Tow-in Services contacts added are for Mario's Garage. Tel: +267 625 2294 or Cell: +267 71 752 785. They provide this service anyway around Chobe District. (Mar-2024).

 Travel Tip!

If you are travelling between Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, the fuel is much cheaper in Botswana. Kwa Nokeng Oil reportedly has the lowest fuel prices in town. To avoid the queue of tourists at the Kazungula Road Border post into Zimbabwe, arrive before 07h30 - most big tour buses leave their lodges from 08h00 onwards. On the Zambian side, you’ll want to overnight in Livingstone rather than Kazungula.
